Not quite as cold, and that is the point. Water ice pulls more heat out of a drink because melting itself absorbs energy — but every joule it absorbs that way costs you a drop of meltwater. Steel cubes take a drink down to roughly fridge-cold and hold it there for about half an hour without adding anything. For spirits, wine and anything carbonated, that trade is worth making.

Two for a 30 ml pour, three or four for a standard rocks pour. The 12-pack is the one most people end up with because it covers a round of drinks and still leaves a set in the freezer.

The edges are rounded and the faces are electropolished smooth, so normal use is fine. Drop them in rather than dropping the glass on them, and treat thin crystal the way you would with any ice.

Yes. 304 is the same food-grade alloy used for commercial kitchen benches, cocktail shakers and brewing tanks. It is non-porous and non-reactive, so it will not leach into what you are drinking or hold onto flavours between uses.

Steel has nothing porous for odours to sit in, unlike soapstone or granite. If your freezer is a strong-smelling one, store them in a sealed container or the tray they ship in and rinse before use.

Steel chills faster and harder, cleans up in the dishwasher and never absorbs anything. Granite and soapstone chill more gently and some whisky drinkers prefer the softer temperature drop. We stock both; if you are undecided, start with steel.
